Epic Games, we learned courtesy of a likewise epic document dump in the midst of its case with Apple, is spending mountains of money to make games single to its stock—which is fine, because it's got mountains of money to spend, and big plans for the coming. But a more recently released document, seen via Simon Carless' GameDiscoverCo newsletter, indicates that there was actually one game in Epic's "first wave" of exclusives, released between Dec 2018 and June 2019, that made money for Epic.

The titles in the original graph are redacted, but redditor MrBubbaJ took a flow from at matching up release dates, which are available on the graph, resulting in the assumption that the game launched on March 19, 2019 is Cheering. The Mg—"minimum guarantee," which is in essence the amount that Large freelance to tumble onto EGS and keep it off of Steamer—is $11.5 million, a hefty sum but also very middle-range on this particular graph. But in its opening year of release—still in proterozoic access, mind—it earned $11.6 million, making IT the only game on the chart to cover its costs.

Satisfactory is a celebrated impinge on: Epic doesn't share possession numbers the room Steam does, but Umber Stain Studios said a week after launch that it had surpassed 500,000 sales, making information technology the company's best launching ever and pushing back on sometimes-forcefully-expressed doubts that games can be sales successes without Steam. Even so, information technology's absorbing to see just how successful it was, you bet it's possible—rarefied, yes, merely possible—for Epic to profit even as information technology drops big bundles to keep games scoop. (Wes along our team really loves the game, I'll note.)

It's also worth mentioning, though, that the return-on-investing film clay comparatively bleak over the long-term: Only two games, Passable and Dauntless, and possibly a third—there's a separate entry for a back discharged connected March 19, which Crataegus laevigata operating room may non be a second entry for Satisfactory—are expected to clear back their minimum secur cost over their life.

Verse form can give to run through those losings—and apparently plans to, American Samoa information technology continues its pursuit to lay claim territory from Steam—only any of those unsurprising washouts carry awfully big price tags. A game released along June 15, 2019, for representativ—possibly Journey, which the Epic Store only lists information technology as being available in 2019—cost $14 million but had solely attained $300,000, just 2% of its minimum guarantee, and was only expected to recover 6% of its MG finished its lifetime.

An even Sir Thomas More celebrated loss can be seen in Metro Exodus, which topped the minimum ensure list with $37 million, but had earned rear to a lesser degree a third of that and is expected to cost Epic more $22 million lifespan. It is perhaps a little stunning that a Major release like Subway Exodus didn't put up stronger numbers, but it was also one of the immature Epic exclusives and came at a time when reactions to games avoiding Steam were running game very hot. Big didn't practise itself whatsoever favors therein see either, swooping in to scoop the gimpy from Steam just a distich of weeks earlier information technology was stage set to launch—a decision it later came to regret.

An Epic Games interpreter declined to comment on the documents.
